The planet earth and the life on it are facing myriads of problems. They have grown so serious that one doubts about the habitability of earth for the generations to come. Survival will become a real struggle for them, as the things stand at present. The global warming has already begun to show its mark. The sea level has risen considerably submerging many low-lying islands in the ocean.

Pollution has gone literally sky high. The life on earth is threatened in every way. The forests are dwindling at a fast rate creating all kinds of problems like drought, land slides etc. The oxygen content in the atmosphere is reducing and the carbon dioxide level is increasing. We all know the role played by the trees and other vegetation in balancing the levels of these two gases.

After listing the main problems of this earth, it is time to think how to remedy it or rather who will find remedies to these problems. The immediate answer will be 'the government and the concerned authorities'. But then, who are these 'concerned authorities'? What are they supposed to do to solve the diverse problems faced by various parts of the world? The problems and their effects are so divers that it is difficult to prescribe a common strategy to deal with them. The common man tends to hoist the responsibilities to the shoulders of the 'government' and the 'authorities' and go about his own business comfortably. This has been the policy of mankind from time immemorial; put the blame and responsibility on others and escape.

But now the time has come for each of the earthlings to take up his own responsibility of preserving this planet for himself and the coming generations. But again, it is the habit of man in general, to think that the impact he himself makes on the problem is negligible. He thinks that if he uses a highly polluting vehicle it doesn't make a difference. If he cuts down a tree for his needs that is alright because it is only one tree after all! 

He expects others to follow the norms and make a difference. We know that there should be a general awareness about these things. But who will go about spreading this awareness? Of course, somebody else, because we are busy with our lives.

  If we are talking about this topic now, it certainly means that we are in grave danger. We have lived on the planet Earth for millions of years. Never before such thoughts were needed or thought of. Surely, this means that we have deliberately or innocently caused destruction  of Earth over the last few centuries.


   Reasons for deterioration of Earth's wealth and health are be many. There was no control over anything. People were involved in warfare, chemicals, selfishness, development without any concern towards other people, animals, birds or other nations. Now is the right time to think straight and set things in the right perspective.


  First we need to examine who and how they spoil this beautiful Earth. Then we eliminate the ways of damage. We can educate the people and invent new practices that will replace obsolete equipment and technologies. Also, habits and living styles of people have to change. That means change in the culture too. Modernization that has taken place over the last few decades has to be re-examined to be converted into a harmless process.

   We live on Earth, so it is our duty to save our planet. If we think that like in Hindu puran and mythology some God will be born to do this, it is our fault. It is our mistake to spread pollution and expect someone else to clean it. Well, Swach Bharat tells us about cleanliness.  There is no other person or extra-terrestrial from space that will come forward and say "okay, now I am going to save this planet".  All the comics like Green Lantern are created to create awareness among people that we need to save our own Earth. Each person is like the Green Lantern. It is absolute selfishness beyond limits and a mental illness to expect someone else to do our job for us.

  Due to our age old practices, industrialization and pollution of all types, many species of animals and birds have become extinct. Many species of fish in the seas and oceans have perished. The Snow Mountains around the world and at the poles are melting slowly. The ocean levels are increasing. The land near the oceans is getting submerged gradually.  Globally the temperatures are rising. The climate is getting hotter.

  Further, the monsoon system has changed. Forests are reducing. The seasons are irregular. There are acid rains here and there. There are droughts and floods at wrong times. The greenhouse gases have increased. The over powerful fertilisers are destroying the lands.

  The industries cause a lot of changes in the weather and environment around the location. The harmful gases deteriorate the atmosphere. The common people do obsolete and harmful practices due to innocence. Like a lot of people still burn the wood to cook, releasing a lot of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. The polythene and plastic bags and materials cause pollution. Flood and cyclones are resulting due to the imbalances in the atmosphere.

   Thus we have to change ourselves, our lifestyle and technologies. We have to use green or biofuels. We must use waste recycling and 4R (reduce, recycle, regenerate, reuse) methods. We need to use more of solar energy powered machines and vehicles. We need to redesign everything that has been damaging Earth's resources.  We need a good method to dispose electronic waste safely. Otherwise, e-waste will create a lot of problems.

  In the last few decades a lot of change has come over. Many voluntary organizations have done demonstrations. Social sites have raised the awareness. We have an Earth Day every year. The west has been progressing further ahead compared to the African and some Asian countries.

  There are some world conventions on this topic. Many governments are associated in this matter and there are scientists working on newer technologies and practices. The world is progressing unevenly with some having the best technology and resources, and on the far side, some having only obsolete technologies causing harm to the Earth and environment.
 
  To bring out the change in everyone, nowadays we have competitions and lessons in schools. People exchange their views freely and look forward to positive improvements in the future. The discipline and control over the use of resources and environment is increasing.

  Of course, as we live on Earth, there is going to be some deterioration of the resources on Earth. We cannot be living like in the rock age or iron age. As the population increased and urbanization has taken place, there has been a lot of imbalance on Earth. We will see surely a good improvement in the coming decades.
 
  My wish and hope is that everyone thinks that it is his/her own duty to see that we use safe practices protecting our Earth. Being careless, because we are not going live after a century is mental illness and inappropriate thinking.
