In the globalization era that is filled by challenges and competitions are super tight, everyone is demanded not only have a high level of education, but also required to have a special capability, commonly called skill. One of the skill that most needed today is English language. In which English has been determined to be one of an international language as verbal language to communicate. Also as an universal language of instruction used in almost every corner of the world.
Everyone is obliged to wrestle in a globalized world if want to grow up and do not run in the same place. By mastering the English language, people can communicate further so that the insight in information technology will be more open. Similarly, by having the ability to communicate using the English language is one of the big capital to step in the world and face the technological advances that are always moving forward. In developing countries such as Indonesia, English language as a vital role in all aspects of life, especially in science and technology. Another, it can be used to develop relationship in international forums and to strengthen the link between the nations in the world.
This paper will demonstrate how the importance of English language in the globalization era whether in everyday life or in educational world, technology, and business. Recalling the importance of English that is used in almost in the entire world, everyone wants to appropriate English as their own. Either as a native language or as a second language.
INTRODUCTION
Language in social life is a major series which highlights the importance of language to an understanding of issues of social and professional concern (Fairclough, 1989). Language as a medium of communication between people who are not only from the same state, but also between countries that have different language. From that, formed an international language like English as an unifying language that is almost used all over the world. Caine (2008) has noted that English is spoken worldwide as the first, second, foreign language or other language. It is clear that English language has become more dominant around the world.
English as an International Language
English is the one of important language in this world. It is an international language which is spoken in many countries both as a native and as a second or foreign language. It is taught in the school in almost every country in this earth. The fact that English is now the main international language is indisputable. In all aspects of international life – trade, science, diplomacy, education and travel – the common language is English and has been for decades. There are two main reasons why English is the current lingua franca; political history and economics. However, Crystal (1997) remarks that a language can be an international language because of the geographical-historical and socio-cultural.
One of the main reasons why English is the international language in the world today is the fact that Britain was the global superpower in the nineteenth century and America is the global superpower in the twentieth and twenty-first. For example, these two English-speaking countries were the most important countries in terms of the military and trade. By conquering and colonizing sum of the world, their customs, culture and way of life became common in those parts of the world. This is why so many ex-British colonies now have English as the national language, with many of their people speaking English as a first language.
Another reason for the spread of English is economics. By being the global political and military superpower, these two countries also became the leading trading nations and many countries and territories needed to learn English in order to trade with them. The USA is currently a major trading partner with almost every other country on the planet due to the size of the consumer economy. This explains why in many countries, English is a compulsory subject in all levels at school.
Therefore, the factors of political history and finance are the most important reasons why English is the current global language.
The Role of English in Everyday Life
Language is a means of expression of thought, emotions, actions etc. There are many languages in this world and all the people do not speak all the languages. English is the most commonly used in International Language and thus if it is learnt, it can bring people closer, it can make business and negotiations easier, and it can help people communicate with others of all cultures across the globe.
