The Chemical Plant
The Number 101 chemical plant was the first of its kind in China. The country had never before played host to such a large-scale chemical industry. The plant created chemicals like benzene, nitrobenzene, and anline, which are all used to make plastic.

The Explosion
Around noon on November 13, the chemical plant’s processing nitration tower experienced a blockage. One of the workers tried to unblock the area, but he was not able to do it. The first explosion occurred as a result of this blockage around 1:40 PM. This first blast was so strong that it shattered windows that were more than 600 feet away. For more than an hour, more explosions happened throughout the plant and eventually caused a huge fire. 300 firefighters battled the blaze until they were finally able to put it out.

The Evacuation
The residents of Jilin City evacuated on their own accord because of the chemicals involved in the explosion and the subsequent fire. About 30,000 residents and 12,000 university students evacuated on their own. The Chinese government had to go in to evacuate 10,000 more residents that were too sick or too old to leave on their own.

The Water Pollution
Even though the government denied it, dangerous chemicals did make their way into the Songhua River. Four days later, they finally admitted that chemicals like benzene were in the water. The 50 miles of toxic slick slowly made its way through different towns and provinces until it dumped out into the Pacific Ocean. Inaccurate news reports and slow government reaction made this disaster much worse than it could have been.
