Salat can help us attain purity and discipline ourselves
IN THE early hours of the morning we are blessed to hear the muezzin cry out the morning azan with the additional phrase, 'Prayer is better than sleep'. The Arabic word 'salat', cannot be substituted for the English word, 'prayer'. For the 'salat' is not only worship. Although its aim is to remember Allah (SWT), 'salat' consists of precise bodily postures - standing, bowing, prostrating and sitting. The posture of 'salat' is an indication of man's relation to his Creator; a relation of reverence, utter submission and gratitude.

Rustam, the legendary general of the Persian army often saw Muslims saying their prayers out in the open. He saw all the Muslims standing in straight lines in rows, their leader standing in front, and amazingly, all the Muslims assuming the same postures as their leader. All the Muslims stood together, kneeled together and sat together emulating their prayer leader. On seeing this, Rustam once remarked. "Umar (the second Caliph) has eaten my liver (Umar has undone me completely). He is teaching the uncouth the 'adab' (discipline) of life."
Salah sharpens our moral sense. It keeps us from indecent, shameful activities. This is stated in the Qur'an: "Salat indeed prevents a person from indecency and evil." (29:45).
Salah is a regular means of purifying both body and soul. The ablution with fresh water before the prayer acts as a refresher and cleanser. The salah if properly performed purifies the soul of arrogance and hypocrisy. The Prophet (peace be on him) likened a person who regularly performed salah to a person who washes himself regularly in a stream of clean running water five times a day. Salat in itself is a tool of training in cleanliness, purity and punctuality bringing the blessed believer mental satisfaction and emotional fulfillment.
It is for the reasons stated above and many others, that 'salat' is the distinguishing factor between the believer and the non-believer [according to the majority of scholars].
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, 'Between a man and disbelief is (only) the abandonment of salah.' [Muslim].
He, (peace be upon him) also said, 'The first thing for which the servant (of Allah) shall be called to account for (on the Day of Reckoning), is the salah. If it was good, then the rest of his deeds are good and if it was bad, then the rest of his deeds are bad.' [At-Tabaranee]
Both Allah and His Prophet (peace be upon him), emphasised the importance of salah on many an occasion. "Then there has succeeded them a posterity who have given up prayers and have followed lusts. So they will be thrown in Hell." [Quran, Maryam:59]
