The Struggle Against Illegal Trade in the Wildlife
The problem of illegal trade of wildlife is very serious in India. In spite of a solid legal framework under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 for the protection of wildlife, the illegal trade of rare animals and plants continues to flourish.
The animals and plants parts that are traded illegally include mongoose hair; rhino horn; deer antlers; turtle shells; tiger and leopard claws, bones, skins, whiskers; elephant tusks; snake skins; shahtoosh shawl; musk pods; medicinal plants; timber and caged birds such as parakeets, mynas, etc. Most of these products are traded in the international market. As a result many species of animals and plants have come on the brink of extinction.
In spite of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, the country has failed to protect its wildlife. What lacks is the poor implementation and enforcement of the wildlife protection policy and strategy. Lackadaisical approach of Government departments, corruption, greed, inefficient law, nepotism, collective will to protect the wildlife, and people’s indifference to the needs of wildlife have further deteriorated the problem.
The need of the hour is the educated people must come forward to fight against this abuse of nature and ecology. There must be total ban on poaching of animals for furs, skins and accessories made of animal skins and bones, rare plants and herbs! The concerned Government ministry in collaboration with Animal Rights Activists must also work proactively to save animals, our partners in existence! if needed, endangered animals protection task forces must be formed. Commandos having all the high-tech-equipment and weapons should be deployed in reserves and sanctuaries.
Elephants, for instance were widely sedated and there tusks removed for ivory.
Snake in many parts of the world is traded for its medicinal properties. Illegal trade has put these species in the endangered category.
The government should propose stringent measures and help the environmentalist save the environment.
