“Titali” Cyclone

Every year many cyclones form in the Indian Ocean and affect India during the monsoon season. This year, in less than a month, between September 20 & October 11, state of Odisha faced two monsoon cyclones named “Daye” & “Titali”. These storms caused so much loss of life and the destruction of property in the state, that their effects will be felt for many years to come.

Cyclone “Titali”, first made the landfall in Andhra Pradesh on October 11, then moved into Odisha state with strong winds and heavy rain. State government, in anticipation of the cyclone, had already evacuated over 3 lakh people living in low lying areas of the five coastal districts to cyclone shelters.

In all eight districts of the state i.e. Ganjam, Gajapati, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore were affected by the storm. Rivers burst their banks flooding nearby villages, trees uprooted, power supply was cutoff and roads were impassable due to falling trees and heavy rain.

According to the initial reports assessing the extent of damage, 52 people died and the state suffered damages worth 3,000 crores. Relief work has already begun and compensation of 10 lakh will be given to the families of the deceased.  “Titali” cyclone will be remembered as one of the strongest storms to hit the Odisha state.
