Indian freedom fight started due to the same reason as in the case of revolutions and freedom fights in other countries. The policies of the British were very cruel and they looked down upon Indians as slaves. They took away the properties of rich people and defeated and killed the kings by shrewdness and cheating.
The great Indian subcontinent was step by step overpowered regionwise by the British through the East India co. in Calcutta. The wealth of India, its innocence and traditional culture of being nice to foreign guests are the main causes for the British to seize power and occupy it.
Notable fights and incidents during the freedom fights are many. Great revolt, that is, Mutiny in 1857 by the soldiers in Agra, Salt Satyagraha and Dandi March in Gujarat, Jail Bharo (fill the jails) call, Quit India movement in 1942, Civil disobedience or the Non-Cooperation movement, the cruel Jallianwala Bagh massacre of innocent people by Colonel Dyer, Swadeshi (patriotism) movement and discarding of foreign textiles in 1905, Khilafat movement, non-cooperation by boycotting functions and duties in 1905, peaceful and silent marches and protests are the major features. We don't find a parallel to these anywhere else. There were many small groups of revolting fighters believing in killing of the British and destruction of the government property.
Among the prominent freedom fighters are Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Gopala Krishna Gokhale, Bipin Chandra Pal, Lala Lajapat Roy, Chidambaram Pillai, Kamraj, Alluri SeetaRamaRaju, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Tantiya Tope, Rabindranath Tagore, Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad, Nauroji and Jaya Prakash Narayan. The freedom movement took a strong and bold step forward after Gandhiji returned from South Africa. There were great warriors like the Rani of Jhansi and Tipu Sultan.
Great help was provided by the friends and locals to the freedom fighters. Great scholars helped running secret presses and circulating papers. Many women participated in the movement including Sarojini Naidu. One does not see unarmed freedom fighters on road boldly walking up to the armed soldiers to be beaten up but never shunning the strong intention of taking our land back.
Thus it took 90 years from 1847 to make the suffering, poor and innocent people of India to take to streets and make the British realize that they cannot control India anymore. Only some parts of the country fought severely against the British. When independence was given it was unfortunate that India was broken into many countries.
