Founded in 1948, the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations looks after maintenance and enforcement of peace in troubled regions of the world.

Often known as Blue Berets or Blue Helmets, it includes soldiers, police officers and at times civilians, numbering close to 100,000 at present.

According to the United Nations Charter, the United Nations Security Council has the responsibility and power for maintenance and enforcement of world peace. The funding for this is collectively from the member states of the UN. They also have the responsibility to make available armed forces and facilities, in the event of situations that warrant the presence and action of UN peacekeepers.

The control of operations is from three heads - the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, responsibile for all political and diplomatic operations, the operation's Force Commander, who heads the military forces and the Chief Administrative officer, in charge of supplies and logistics.

While the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations have ensured enforcement and maintenance of peace in most instances, there have also been issues related to human rights abuse, raised against peacekeepers.

Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix is the current head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations.
