Short Story

Buddy The Naughty Dog

Monique White, Grade 9, Distance Education Centre Victoria Short Story 2009

Right from the start, Buddy was a naughty dog. He always ate his sister Maggie's biscuits and never shared his. He ripped up the carpet and broke the windows. But when their owners came home, he sat on his bed, ate his biscuits and looked very innocent. He often blamed Maggie for the things he did by pointing his paw at her. Maggie was a well-tempered, peaceful dog. She wished her owners knew the truth about Buddy's tricks.

One day Buddy and Maggie's owners went on a day trip to the beach. The dogs stayed home and looked after the house. As usual, Buddy ate Maggie's biscuits. Maggie was really hungry, so she tried to eat some of Buddy's. After that she wished she hadn't. Buddy growled and started pouncing toward her. She ran as fast as she could, - onto the patio - off the patio - into the house - up the stairs - down the stairs - and into the dining room. Buddy cornered her in between the chairs. Maggie reversed as much as she could and took the highest leap of her life right over Buddy. She ran into the kitchen and onto the bench. Buddy ran after her and straight into a china pot filled with mother Pam's famous strawberry jam. The pot broke, smearing jam all over Buddy's head and down his back. Strawberry jam was one food that Buddy couldn't stand the taste of. Maggie either. So instead of removing any trace of the jam by licking it off, the only way Buddy knew how, he sat sadly, while the jam dried hard in his fur.

That afternoon their owners came home. Buddy was resting his head on a pillow while watching the postman. This time he felt too sad to run after him like he usually did. There was no way Buddy could blame Maggie for the breaking of the jam pot. The family car pulled up. Maggie ran up and started licking her owners. They all went inside and saw the mess.

Mother Pam was quite upset. She stomped outside to the dogs. She looked at Maggie with an angry face, assuming Maggie would've done this because she thought Maggie had done all the naughty things that Buddy had. Maggie pointed her paw at Buddy. Mother Pam looked at Buddy and knew that he had broken the pot because of the jam stains still smeared on him.

Buddy had a long bubble bath until all the jam was gone. His owners never fell for Buddy's tricks again and he finally learnt his lesson. He was never naughty again (on purpose).

The End
