If we’re talking about the news-gathering operation itself, yes. “The Internet” doesn’t do reporting or take pictures. It’s a mode of transmitting information. But there has to be something to transmit, some content. That information gathering and creation is done by people like reporters and photographers and videographers employed by newspapers.
If we’re talking about the actual physical product of a newspaper, yes. Newspaper companies traditionally made the bulk of their money from ads. And when selling an online ad vs. a print ad, the print ad goes for a lot more. Newspapers that try to survive just on online ads face a particularly tough challenge in revenues. It’s tough to be sustainable on just online ads alone.
