He wanted people to leave god and worship him but his own son prahalad was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu . Hiranyakashyap tried many ways to kill prahalad but was failed. So he called his sister holika who got the boon that fire cannot make her to die. so she stepped in the burning fire with prahalad as a result of which holika died and prahalad was saved without a single scratch on his body.
