इंदिरा गांधी का जन्म 19 नवंबर 1917 को उत्तर प्रदेश के इलाहाबाद में एक संपन्न परिवार में हुआ था। उनका पूरा नाम था- 'इंदिरा प्रियदर्शिनी'। उन्हें एक घरेलू नाम भी मिला था जो इंदिरा का संक्षिप्त रूप 'इंदु' था। उनके पिता का नाम जवाहरलाल नेहरू और दादा का नाम मोतीलाल नेहरू था। पिता एवं दादा दोनों वकालत के पेशे से संबंधित थे और देश की स्वाधीनता में उनका महत्वपूर्ण योगदान था। माता का नाम कमला नेहरू था।

इंदिराजी का जन्म ऐसे परिवार में हुआ था जो आर्थिक एवं बौद्धिक दोनों दृष्टि से काफी संपन्न था। उनका इंदिरा नाम उनके दादा पंडित मोतीलाल नेहरू ने रखा था। जिसका मतलब होता है कांति, लक्ष्मी एवं शोभा। इस नाम के पीछे की वजह यह थी कि उनके दादाजी को लगता था कि पौत्री के रूप में उन्हें मां लक्ष्मी और दुर्गा की प्राप्ति हुई है।

इंदिरा के अत्यंत प्रिय दिखने के कारण पंडित नेहरू उन्हें 'प्रियदर्शिनी' के नाम से संबोधित किया करते थे। चूंकि जवाहरलाल नेहरू और कमला नेहरू स्वयं बेहद सुंदर तथा आकर्षक व्यक्तित्व के मालिक थे, इस कारण सुंदरता उन्हें अपने माता-पिता से प्राप्त हुई थी। इंदिरा को उनका 'गांधी' उपनाम फिरोज गांधी से विवाह के बाद मिला था।
