South Korea is a recent trend. Most of the common people are yet unaware about cultures of South Korea. But the people who are in touch with traveling and food know about this trend. First I listened about South Korea was during my college days when there was a craze for Korean dramas a.k.a. K-Dramas in my hostel.

I saw few series like Personal Taste, Boys Over Flowers, Coffee Prince which made me its fan instantly. The places, the food, the fashion, the lifestyle shown in those dramas were so cool. Traditional homes with bamboo furniture, sliding doors, elders being respected the most. The food. Ah! That Kimchi and Noodles. Instant noodles made mostly soupy and an egg on top which can make anyone hungry. Kimchi, which is made on holiday by whole family together. Public baths, stalls of fish cakes, steam buns, instant noodles, rice cakes, variety of coffee and small porridge shops. Then there was fashion in those dramas which were very attractive and very practical, easy to copy.

I researched more and came to know about Korean Wave in the world. It refers to likings of Korean food, fashion, and shows among youth. The fashion sense which is popularly known as Ulzzang is followed everywhere (see pinterest) and now becoming an inspiration for street fashion. Trendy, colorful, practical, youthful clothes. Then there is beauty, girls with spotless face,, silky long hair, cute smile. I recently saw a TV show where the host was travelling to Korea and he went at two places Seoul and Busan. He asked a local about the secret behind the beauty and the girl said, “Probably Ginseng” I remember I never knew this word but it was the focus of a Jackie Chan’s film Drunken Master II (another if my liking). Busan had lovely beach.

During that research I came to know about K-pop which is super hit and there was Gangnam Style which made Guinness World Records, was composed by Korean musician PSY. I am not a fan of pop but the Gangnam Style was something very very cool.

The craze of Selfie came from South Korea itself, no need to elaborate on that. Facebook is all about selfies now!

The lifestyle channels on TV like NatGeoLife, has many shows on Korean culture. Even the show Descendants of the Sun on a Hindi channel attracted maximum TRPs of that specific channel. The Korean dramas as I mentioned is a craze in Asia. It has become a talk among college going and students who has lived or studies with international students in India. I too got to know about all this from students of Nepal, Bhutan and Mongolia.

The show had amazing views of Seoul during winters. Skating rings filled with young couples, colorful lights on tress, neon signs on shops. There are other great things about South Korea like energy, transportation, compulsory military service for youth. But this question is about “what I like” so I like is Hallyu or Korean Wave (see wiki). You can have your own likings, the special things which attracted you to this place.
