Parents’ expectations shape the life of their children. These expectations affect the children psychologically, behaviorally, and socially. When they are too high, they build up pressure on the kids, sometimes leading them to feeling displeased with themselves and even to depression. When they are too low, this may lead to the children not achieving their full potential with the lack of encouragement and support. This was mostly due to the high encouragement and support system I had at home. But this also was a burden on me, building up year after year after year. Every time I met my parents’ expectations, they expected more the next time. I did not question it though; I knew that I was a smart person, of course because my mother had said so. Thus I started building up high expectations for myself as well. I used to cry when I got a good grade but not a full one. I wanted to be the best in everything, to make my parents happy and proud. When my mother enrolled me in violin classes, I used to attend every class, memorise the notes, and play for my parents every song I learned. I knew it made them happy, but eventually I got bored of it and dropped out. It was not a big disappointment for my parents though, because their focus was mainly on academics. I was not an athlete, nor did I have special talents which I am aware of, thus my parents went with me through the academic path.
