Structure of the Essay Competition
The Essay Competition consists of written submission ONLY in English language. It has to be
submitted on the portal of the ONGC Foundation before the mentioned deadline. Each participant
can submit only ONE Essay on any one of the topics mentioned above.
Only original essays will be considered for the competition. Previously published essays are excluded.
Any form of plagiarism will result in disqualification of the essay.
Length of Essay:
The
essay shall be no longer than 1000 words. There is no down limit, although essays shorter than 900
words are not encouraged.

Typed on an A4 size electronic page
Font: Times New Roman
Font size shall be 12 points
1.5 interlinear space
Margins of 2.54 cm on top, bottom and both sides.
Participants' name, class and other details should not be anywhere inside the document, so that
it can be judged anonymously.
The List of References shall include all cited texts throughout the Written Submission. It
should be listed at the end of the essay.

The essays will be assessed majorly on the following factors-

brevity
structure and
overall impression
The quality of language will not be a decisive factor, as long as the text retains its clarity and cohere
Decision of the judges will be final in all situations. There is no obligation on the ONGC Foundatio,
or the judges to explain the decision made.

Explanation:
Disposable Plastic/Single-Use Plastic Meaning- Single-use plastic is plastic that is used only once before it is thrown away or recycled. Disposable plastic includes; plastic bags, coffee stirrers, straws, cola and water bottles, cigarette butts, food packaging, plastic caps, and shopping bags.
Disposable Plastic Problems- More than 380 million tons of plastic are produced in the world every year. The weight of this plastic is almost equal to the weight of the entire human population. Although plastic has some good uses, we humans have become addicted to Single-Use Plastic and single-use plastic. 1/2 of all produced plastic is designed to be used only once and then thrown away.
“According To The Researchers; We have produced more than 8.3 billion tons of plastic since the early 1950s. Almost 60% of plastic ends up in the oceans or the natural environment.”
The rate at which plastic is produced is alarming. In this process, more than 99% of plastic is made from natural resources; gas, oil, and coal. Single-use plastic is used in seas, oceans, land areas, fresh waters, etc. it pollutes our environment. Single-use plastic produces a large number of harmful gases that are not only harmful to our environment, but also to humans.
Disposable Plastic Problem Solution-There are many steps we can take to reduce the impact of Single-Use Plastic on our environment and society. Some steps include:
Awareness campaigns: We need to raise awareness of people/community about the effects of Single-Use Plastic on our environment. We need to teach them how they can reduce their use of Single-Use Plastic. We can be aware of them through posters, social media posts, advertisements, and more.
Use Disposable Plastic Alternatives: As responsible citizens of our country, we need to take some important steps to reduce the effects of Single-Use Plastic on our environment.
WE SHOULD USE DISPOSABLE PLASTIC ALTERNATIVES-
• Instead of buying plastic bottled water from stores and restaurants, we can use reusable tap water to drink.
• We should use cotton bags instead of plastic grocery bags.
• We should say no to plastic grocery products.
• Buy Reusable Items:
• We should buy products that can be recycled and reused and avoid buying Single-Use Plastic products.
• 7 Apply the R method:
We've all heard of the 3Rs; Reuse, recycling, and reduce. But we must think beyond that. We need to apply the 7 Rs in our lives.
7R'S MEANING:
• Rethink.
• Refuse.
• Repurpose.
• Reuse.
• Recycle.
• Rot.
Global Initiatives For Disposable Plastic Issues: The European Parliament approved a complete ban on Single-Use Plastic in October 2018. The initiative went into effect in 2021. Not only in Europe but also in South Korea has announced an initiative to reduce waste from stores and industries to Zero percent by 2027. South Korea announced this initiative on September 4, 2018. More and more countries around the world are joining the campaign. Malaysia, Taiwan, France, Kenya, and Seattle have also banned the use of Single-Use Plastic.
India Initiatives To Ban Disposable Plastics: The Union Government has drawn up a multi-ministerial plan to curb and deter the use of Single-Use Plastics in India in 2019. The Central Government of India has announced that it will ban the use of Single-Use Plastics from 1 July 2022.
Disposable Plastic Trial Result- We all know how harmful plastic is to our environment. We, humans, are responsible for misusing it. We need to take some important steps to stop the effects of Single Use plastics on our environment. We must promise not to use single-use plastic. We should use disposable plastic alternatives. So we can get rid of this big problem.
