About my neighborhood:
■ I like the three parks, especially Kit Carson Park and the bike/hiking trail.
■ I wish the Kiwanis Club would get more help and funds to make the Kit Carson restrooms disabled accessible, as they have been closed for several years. Plus, I wish more people would clean up after their dogs. There are “doggie bags” furnished in each of these parks, plus on the Roosevelt School field.
■ When I grew up, there were very few rental houses in this area. Now about half the houses on my street are rentals. We still have great neighbors and I supply a list of names for the people on our street.
■ Especially with the increased rental properties, I wish more renters and owners would take care of their property: like mowing lawns, taking care of alleys, removing weeds over 8 inches tall, trimming trees to 7 feet over sidewalks and 13 feet over streets and alleys. How about junk and trimmings in the alleys or yards?
■ My house and many homes in this area, including Roosevelt School, are geothermal. I have not had a heat bill since 1965. While teaching at Roosevelt School they drilled the first well. They said it would take seven years to pay for this project; they later announced in 2 1/4 years the well was paid for. This well included all heat and hot water.
■ When I grew up I walked to school each day. Fremont Street today is a mess with all of the cars delivering or picking up students each day. I wish more students could work together with neighbor students to walk to and from school to get more exercise and save gas and related fumes.
■ I walk the streets and alleys with my dog and enjoy this time.
■ While walking I observe many, many obsolete and unlicensed vehicles on the streets and yards that could be removed and benefit the owners and neighbors. Organizations such as Dogs for the Deaf have a program for vehicle removal.
■ During the winter, I usually use my snow blower to clear snow from my sidewalk, my neighbors’ and both sides of my street, plus at times clear around my block. I tell the neighbors and the mailman, my dog and I use these sidewalks more than others.
■ I wish more residents would follow the city ordinance for snow removal next winter.
