Health depends on cleanliness and cleanliness means health. Linked so closely are two inseparable concepts. We have observed that lack of cleanliness in the surroundings have given rise to major diseases.
In 1994, plague struck the city of Surat in Gujarat. This deadly epidemic spread due to the unhygienic conditions in Surat. Dirty roads, filthy conditions in food stalls and restaurants, lack of proper sanitation and clean drinking water. The Municipal Commissioner, Mr S R Rao with his team worked hard and converted this unhygienic city to the second clean city in India. Social leadership had made it possible.
Ignorance and lack of concern for others is the reason why cleanliness is neglected in society. Though we keep our homes clean, we dirty our streets, beaches, gardens. A social leader needs to encourage people to keep their environment clean.
The Three R's: REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE FOR A CLEAN ENVIRONMENT:
Also needed
Raising awareness in the neighborhood
Sweeping of roads and regular fumigation
Prevention of littering and piling of garbage
revention of stagnation of water
Use cloth and paper bags
As a social leader, spread awareness in your community and communicate to everyone on how they can join this cleanliness campaign.
You can also
Stop people from throwing garbage outside their homes and in water bodies
equest the use of urinals and toilets
Prevent spitting of paan and tobacco on roads and on the walls
These tasks can be carried out by convincing people about the problems that arise out of lack of cleanliness.
Systematic activities will also help in building a healthy society. Spreading information about prevention of diseases and educating the masses about different vaccinations is also important.
Steps for a healthy society
Organize health camps regularly
Invite specialists to educate people about diseases
Distribute health educational pamphlet
Talks and informative films will help spread the message
Provide health cards to maintain records of visits, vaccinations and doctors remarks
As a social leader committed to health, make sure that people visit health camps and vaccination centers on special vaccination days.
Work in groups and explain the importance of simple hygiene methods for a clean and healthy body and environment.
Colorful banners and posters related to health can make the awareness more interesting and attract more people to the campaign.
The role of a social leader in the field of health also involves some very basic tasks. Good health needs a good diet and wholesome nutrition. Spreading awareness about clean drinking water and healthy food is also a requirement. People need to be educated about the fact that nutrition and exercise is cheaper than medicine and cure. Hygienically cooked meals that include vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats and proteins are a must to stay fit.
Today the “Swach Bharat” Mission is aimed at cleanliness and health.
We must think tidy. Our health depends on Cleanliness. A ‘Clean Nation’ is ‘A Healthy Nation’. A healthy and clean India is a ‘Happy India’.

It is important to make people aware about its importance, but more than that awareness should translate into actions. Since our government has already taken this initiative, it will definitely bring people to action and make them conscious towards maintaining cleanliness and health hygiene. Other than this, our government can also launch a separate drive for cleanliness awareness so that the number of people working for this campaign can grow. Eventually, such initiatives will not only change people’s ‘Chalta Hai’ attitude, but will also ascertain their participation.
In fact, this drive of maintaining cleanliness and hygiene was very much there even before India gained Independence and many great Indian leaders, such as Mahatma Gandhi dwelt on observing good habits as well as cleanliness in order to foster positive attitude amongst the people. As it is said that cleanliness is next to godliness, we should never ever let our surroundings to remain unclean otherwise it will affect our character and behavior. In many countries, throwing garbage or spitting on the road is considered a serious offence, but in our country we see almost every other passerby spitting tobacco or other things on the road. Is this a mark of the civilized society? Of course not, right!
So, why do we not take concrete measures and strictly prohibit not only others but ourselves of not throwing waste in our surroundings. I hope other thanSwachh Bharat Abhiyan; our campaign too will bring a considerable change in our society for good and encourage people to maintain cleanliness all around.
