The vaitaltka and the sanai in the night of 22 December were followed by
brahmopasana at chhaPmtala early in the morning of the 23rd. Mohanlal Bajpai
and Supriyo Tagore chanted the Vedic hymas, in Sanskrit and Bengali respec-
tively. The Upacharya spoke on the significance of the 7th of Poush. His
speech was interspersed with sangeeL At the close of the upasana^ ashrama
members went around the chhatimtala and then proceeded to the melaprangana.
23 December at 10 AM students of Uttar Siksha-Sadana, Patha-Bhavana
and Siksha-Satra received their certificates at amrakunja. At the same venue
next morning, the annual convocation of Visva-Bharati was held. The speeches
by the Acharya, the Pradhan Atithi and the Upacharya, delivered on the
occasion, are printed elsewhere in this issue.
The fair had drawn participants from far and near. Visva-Bharati’s stalls
were arranged round a centre-piece of chrysanthemum, dahlia and marigold
shaded by an artistically crafted straw hut and guarded, as it were, by a
wooden watchman, gnarled and knotty. As in other years, VB publications
and craftsware were sold at a rebate of 10% through 23-25 December.
The usual programs of yoga, lathi’^bhela, bauUmurshidi^kirtan^kavigan
Satyapirer panchah, Raibeshe and Santhali sports, Lok Sanskritir AsaVy yatra^ etc.
attracted motley crowds and did a lot to liven up the fair. The Maharshi
Devendranath commemorative lecture, the meeting in the memory of deceased
ashrama-memhers, and the annual general meetings of the Santiniketan
Ashramik Sangha and the Visva-Bharati Alumni Association, were held as in
other years.
The evening of 24 December was star-spangled as usual by the display of
fireworks. In the evening of 25 December, chhatimtala was lit-up with candles
and Chnstotsava was observed with iipasana at the mandiry also charmingly
lit-up. Manasi Dasgupta, the acharyay discussed with the help of an illustra-
tion the significance of 25 December.
The fair was extended by a day and it was January before its last traces
faded away.
The Visva-Bharati Alumni Association held its 31st Annual General Meeting on
25 December 1981 at amrakunja.
