Before 15 August, 1947 british government ruled our country for about 200 years. Indian people suffered too much during the british rule. Then some great leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Chandrashekhar Azad, Sardar Bhagat Singh came forward and fought for the freedom of India. Many people sacrificed their life in freedom movements and protests against British. But finally after years of efforts and many sacrifices our country got freedom from british rule on 15 August, 1947 and therefore this day is celebrated as Independence day of India.

Independence day is celebrated every year to invoke the patriotic feeling among each and every people of India and to remind the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters and Indian people to achieve freedom. Independence day is celebrated in schools, colleges, offices and in every part of our country with great enthusiasm and various cultural activities and events are organised on this occasion. In schools, the national flag is hosted by the chief guest and then speeches are delivered by chief guests, teachers and students about the importance of this day.
