when connected in series, the current remains the same (i)

voltage drop across the first resistor is given as: v1=iR1

similarly v drop across 2nd resistor v2=iR2

v drop across third resistor v3=iR3

so the total voltage drop : V=v1+v2+v3

                                        iR=iR1+iR2+iR3

cancelling common factor,R=R1+R2+R3
