The process of establishing the Soviet Union began with the Russian Revolution of 1917. In this revolution, the Russian Empire was removed from power and hence monarchy was disestablished. Union of the Soviet Socialist Republic, a large nation over a large area of Eurasia, which existed from 1922-1991 was ruled by the Communist Party from its inception till 1990. The Bolsheviks which was led by the Vladimir Lenin, occupied several states during the civil war and seized all the power. Declared independence from Russia in exchange for the fall of the Czar. And hence the Bolsheviks won in 1922 and announced the establishment of the Soviet Union by joining Russia and several other countries.
