Lord Cornwallis (1738 - 1805) was a Commander-in-Chief of British India, who later became the Governor of the Bengal Presidency.
During his time he was appointed to look into corruption and irregularities of the British East India Company. He addressed this by introducing reforms to weed out nepotism and political influence in the running of the company.
He also introduced several reforms to augment the criminal and judicial system. Some of these still form the basis of current Indian judicial system.
Though Lord Cornwallis looked down upon Indians and in a way encouraged racism, he also had a soft side to him.
He introduced laws to protect the poor weavers, banned slavery of children, and established a Sanskrit institute at Benares. He also established a mint at Calcutta.
