General Procedure for the Determination of Lactose in Milk The determination of lactose present in the milk was first carried out by Kolthoff in 1923.
Since the reaction is not sufficiently rapid to make a direct titration possible, the sugar solution (milk serum) is mixed with excess of iodine and alkali.
