1) Sonar works on the principle of echoes. A strong and short (ultrasonic) sound signal is sent towards the bottom of the ocean. The echo of this signal is then detected by it.

The sensation of sound persists in our brain for about 0.1 s.
i.e to hear a distinct echo the minimum time interval between the original sound and the reflected sound = 0.1s.
Distance = v×t / 2
= 350 m/s × 0.1s / 2
= 35 m / 2
= 17.5 m
