Answer:

Distillation

Explanation:

Ethanol is purified almost only by distillation in the industry. Although distillation is one of the most effective liquid-liquid separation techniques, it contains some critical disadvantage, cost and limitation on separation of volatile organic compounds.

Answer:

The fermentation broth containing ethanol is distilled in the recovery area. Two distillation columns are simulated to perform the ethanol purification. First, the beer column is a RadFrac equilibrium–based column accomplished with 21 stages where ethanol and water are evaporated from the fermentation broth trough the eighth stage. Then, this mixture is separated in a second RadFrac equilibrium–based column accomplished with 39 stages, obtaining 92.5 wt.% pure ethanol as a distillate. The distillation bottom is recycled back to pretreatment. Distillate is later separated to 99.5 wt.% ethanol purity through vapor-phase molecular sieve adsorption.
