In simple terms, Both Ethanol and Methanol are hydrocarbon compounds that have alcohol groups attached t them. As per the definition both types are made up of Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen, so they are practically the same groups.

In general, both are considered to be belonging to the same group as Ethanol is used in the preparation of Methanol, which is a higher Hydrocarbon in the same category. If you tend to mix the two types, they would simply be present as Molecules of Hydrogen, carbon and Oxygen.

Both types would easily get mixed with each other and different products could be formed like Di-Methyl-Ether or even Di-ethyl-ether. The fact is that you would get a cross type of product in case you are making use of Acid catalyst to speed up the reaction. Both types are hazardous and poisonous by nature.
