KMnO₄ (Potassium permanganate is a very strong oxidizing agent . Ethanol (C₂H₅OH) when reacts with KMnO₄, the Mn gets reduce from (+7) to (+2) and oxidize ethanol to ethanal and then subsequently to ethanoic acid .

 C₂H₅OH + KMnO₄/H⁺    → CH₃CH0  →   CH₃COOH
