Explanation: This is a three steps reaction.

1) Ethanol reacts with thionyl chloride in presence of pyridine to give chloroethane.

C₂H₅OH + SOCl₂ → C₂H₅Cl + SO₂ + HCl

2) Chloroethane reacts with Na metal in presence of dry ether to give butane. This is a Wurtz reaction.

2C₂H₅Cl + Na → CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₃

3) Butane reacts with alcoholic KMnO₄ to give butanoic acid.

CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₃ + Alc. KMnO₄ → CH₃CH₂CH₂COOH
