2 CH3CH2OH + [O] → CH3C(=O)OCH2CH3 + x H2O
The individual steps are first, oxidation of ethanol to acetic acid and this can be done with a variety of reagents such as dichromate ([O]).
CH3CH2OH + [O] → CH3C(=O)-OH + H2O
(where [O] is the oxidant and water necessarily forms).
Then, the second step is an esterification, typically catalyzed by acid:
CH3C(=O)-OH + CH3CH2OH (+ acid catalyst) → CH3C(=O)OCH2CH3 + H2O
