● Lewis acids and bases -
- Lewis' theory states that an acid is a species that accepts an electron pair while a base donates an electron pair.
● Why do ether act as bases with mineral acids -
- Mineral acids are electrophilic and can accept free elecrrons acting Lewis acids.
- Ethers have oxygen in the center with two organic groups attached.
- This oxygen atom has to electron pairs to lose. Thus, it acts as electron donor and therefore a Lewis base.
