There are two larger ethnic group in Sri Lanka, and these are Sinhalese and Tamils and Sinhalese being major have virtually reduced the rights of Tamil. The conflict started long back when LTTE started campaigns against the state and also targeted police and other state machinery. On the intervention of many other neighboring countries including India, the majority of Tamil group agreed to peaceful solution, however so far there is no outcome of talks.

The origins of the Sri Lankan Civil War lie in the continuous political rancor between the majority Sinhalese and the minority Tamils. The roots of the modern conflict extend back to the colonial era when the country was known as Ceylon. \
