The reaction scheme is proceeded with chlorination of acetic acid under the influence of acetic anhydride as a catalyst and is expressed as below,

CH3COOH + Cl2 → ClCH2CO2H + HClThe main industrial reaction scheme for 2−chloroethanoic acid is hydrolysis of trichloroethyleneusing sulfuric acid as a catalyst,CCl2CHCl + 2H2O → ClCH2CO2H + 2HCl
