Eutrophication is one kind of a water pollution which occurs due to the increase in nitrates and phosphates in water, and due to which algal boom takes place. This chokes the water body leading to Eutrophication. As the algae dies and settles at the bottom, the bacteria that decomposes it uses up all the oxygen in the water. This results in high Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD). Finally, all aquatic animals die due to suffocation.
The basic cause of this water hazard is the surplus fertilizers from the fields that are washed by rain, surface run off and carried to local water bodies.
