Eva is adding two 4-digit numbers together. The answer has a five in the tens column where an exchange has taken place. What digits could be in the tens column of the two numbers being added together?

Please help my little brother. It would mean a lot. He's on in primary.

  • As we are dealing with just the tens digits so the numbers in the hundred and thousand place do not matter.
  • As given an exchange has taken place so the max exchange value could be 1 since we are adding two unit places which can have a maximum sum of 18(9+9) having a carry of 1.
  • So the sum of only the tens column of the two numbers should be (5-1)=4.
  • ∴The possible cases are (0,4),(1,3),(2,2).
