 \frac{5}{8}  +  \frac{1}{4}  =  \frac{5 \times 4 + 1 \times 8}{8 \times 4}  =  \frac{20 + 8}{32}  =  \frac{28}{32}  =  \frac{14}{16 } =  \frac{7}{8 }   \\   = \frac{7}{8}  -  \frac{7}{12}  =  \frac{7 \times 12 - 7 \times 8}{8 \times 12}  =  \frac{84 - 56}{96}  =  \frac{28}{96}  = \frac{14}{48 }  =  \frac{7}{24}

7/24 is the required number
