Fritz - by Satyajit Ray - is a queer story which keeps the readers guessing throughout. It is a bit ghostly, suspense keeps building up but it never turns dizart or overly frightening. It teases imagination with the promise of the unknown. The story begins on an easy with the introduction of two childhood friends - Shankar and Jayanto. They go on a vacation to Bundi where Jayanto is triggered by his childhood memories in the place. Then the story regarding Jayanto's doll - Fritz - comes up. He had loved the doll of the old man very much and thought it to be his best friend. He even felt that Fritz could really talk to him if he spoke in German since Fritz was a Swiss doll. Jayanto was an hypersensitive person and used to take tranquilizers. So we can rationalize the thoughts Jayanto had in connection with his doll as a childhood fantasy of an over sensitive boy but somewhere the readers become aware of something deeper than this. But later on the doll was destroyed by a couple of stray dogs when Jayanto had left it in the garden one evening. Its face was torn beyond recognition and for Jayanto - Fritz did not exist anymore. It was then buried under a deodar tree. The suspense grips when we read what happens to ( the now grown up ) Jayanto and Shankar when Jayanto feels two legs walking on his chest and sees footprints on his quilt. Jayanto believed that it was Fritz who did this. Shankar being a very practical and down to earth person could only react by shaking his friend for being obsessed with such unethical thoughts. Shankar felt hat there was only one way to get this idea out of his friend and that is to dig the ground under the deodar tree where Fritz was burried. Suspense builds further thereafter , and on digging the ground there , they were horrified to see a 12 inch long pure white perfect little human skeleton(in place of the doll)!!

Satyajit Ray ends the story leaving the rest to the imagination of he readers. It gives us a spooky feeling with suttled hints of the unreal, more of paranormal genre.

Hope This Helps ...
