The Mughal emperor Akbar conquered Kashmir in 1586 CE.   He added it to his Afghan province Kabul but his successor Shah Jahan separated it and made it a new province with Srinagar as it's capital.   They built many beautiful mosques, palaces and gardens.   Aurangzeb's policy of intolerance against the Hindus drove them away from the Kashmir region.
