EVAPORATION

Evaporation is a process of liquid turning into the gaseous form. It happens on the surface of water.

It is generally a slow process.

The rate of evaporation depends on following factors :-

  1. Surface Area
  2. Temperature
  3. Wind Speed
  4. Humidity

Evaporation is directly proportional to surface area, temperature and wind speed. It means that it increases with an increase in the surface area, temperature, and wind speed but it is inversely proportional to humidity, i.e., it decreases with an increase in humidity.

We all know that heat is required for evaporation to take place. It is a surface phenomenon. Water evaporates slowly because of the hydrogen bonding between the molecules of water. For evaporation to take place the water needs to boil first which happens at a temperature of 100°C.

Evaporation can take place at any temperature. That is, it happens everyday, cooler will be the temperature, lower will be the rate of evaporation and vice - versa.

Example :- Wet clothes take a lot of time to dry up on a humid day, because of the slow evaporation rate due to water vapours present in air, whereas they dry up quickly on a hot summer day.
