Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can be prevented by using the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella vaccine). An unvaccinated child is 35 times more likely to contract the disease as compared to a vaccinated child. However, if a vaccinated child is in the presence of a measles patient, he/she still has a slim chance of contracting the disease because of the following reasons:

1 - Vaccines are not 100% effective, 100% of the time.

2 - It has been found that in about 2 to 5% of the vaccinated children, the immunity does not develop after the first dose of the vaccine and require the second booster dose. If the second dose is missed, then the children are exposed to the threat of the disease. The importance of the second dose was understood and introduced only in 1985.
