The grandma of narrator used to feed the sparrows with bread crumbs and when she left the world the birds sat all over the room in perfect silence until her body was taken for the cremation. The birds took no notice of the bread crumbs fed to them by the narrator's mother.

This way the birds paid their love for the grandma....
