Even though irrigation facilities and bio-chemical inputs increased production then why is it also called intensive subsistence farming in densely populated regions?

Answer: Despite of the fact that advance irrigation facilities and modern bio-chemical inputs resulted in enormous increase in agricultural production it still remain in subsistence level feeding vast population. There is not enough surplus for commercial use.
