As we know that particles of matter are in constant motion, the particles of potassium permanganate are in constant motion, too. When put in a unit volume of water the particles of potassium permanganate move to fill the intermolecular space between the molecules of water. This is the reason why the colour of water changes when potassium permangate is put into it. This mixing of molecules is called Diffusion.
