Answer:

It was my first time in China and I see many similar faces and it was very confusing for me to know who is who, like they say in India all Chinese look alike. I would like to share a funny incident happened with me.

I am an Indian and I was getting married to a Chinese woman. I visit China to get my marriage certificate and it was my first time seeing my wife’s parents. On the first day in China we went to marriage counselor, my wife was busy with documents and asked me to call her father who was waiting outside the office to pick us back to home. Since, I have seen him very few times that day I am not sure I can recognize him but I still went out to see him. There were many people outside the office, but I have seen his car and there was a guy in the car. I went to him and I signaled to come inside and he followed me. After going inside the office and showed him my wife, my wife turned to me and by her facial expressions I understood I picked the wrong person. This happened because I can’t understand Chinese and in China they don’t speak English, they all looked similar to me and cars are of course similar.

I was there for few days and I was having total confusion. This not only happens to me but it happens to Chinese also about Indians. I would like to say you another incident when my wife came to India.

My wife with her sister came to India. I was getting married to this Chinese woman in India and in Indian tradition in front of all my family members and friends. There were around 300 people who attend the marriage and my wife and her sister are only two persons from her family and from China. After marriage I went to China and my wife was showing our marriage album to her parents. After my wife’s father had seen the video and pictures of our marriage in India, he said to my wife “They all look same. I don’t understand who are his sisters and who are his friends, they all look similar”.

To Chinese all Indians look similar and to Indians we can never know who is Chinese, Japanese or Koreans and they all look same to us.

I have been working in China now for one year now and I don’t have that confusion anymore. I can know people when I see next time even if I have seen them only one time before and I can even say their names perfectly because I am familiar with their language. I know many students and I go to their school I can know kids by their name. These kids look similar maybe because they all are white and when there is new trend in hair style you see everyone having the same hairstyle or similar outfits all over. It’s just that you get used to this environment and now when I see Chinese around I feel most of them look like Indians.
