. (i) After independence, the literacy rate was quite low in India.

(ii) It was not possible for the voters to read the name of the candidate and vote.

(iii) Therefore, the Election Commission gave symbols to political parties and independent

candidates which helped the voters to identify and decide whom to vote for.
