Every rational number is represented by one and only one point on the number line.

  • Rational number: The numbers which can be expressed as a fraction x/y where both x and y are integers with a non-zero y, are called rational numbers.
  • Examples: 1/2, 1/1, 3/4, etc.

Representing a rational number on the number line:

Let us consider that a rational number x/y can be represented as a/b.

Then by equality of two numbers, we write

x/y = a/b

Equating we get

x = a, y = b

This says the unique representation of any rational number.
