Answer:

The narrator's grandmother was taken ill due to overstraining and exertion.Unfortunately, that became the cause of her death. The members of the auther's family lifted her off the bed and laid her on the ground. Her dead body was covered with a red shroud. After a few hours of morning they lift her alone to make arrangements for her funeral. In the evening they went to her room with a stretcher to take her to be cremated. They found that all over the verandah and in her room right up to where she lay dead and stiff, thousands of sparrows sat scattered on the floor. There was no chirruping. The sparrows came there to morn the death of grandmother. The auther's mother threw little crumbs to them but they paid no heed to the bread. When the people carried the narrator's grandmother's corpse off, they flew away quiety. This shows that they did not came there for bread.
