Everyday, we hear sounds from various sources like humans, animals, birds, machines, sound systems etc. Sound is a form of energy which produces a sensation of hearing in our ears. Sound is produced by vibrating objects. The object that produces sound is known as a source of sound. Sound moves through a medium from the source to the listener in form of waves. Speed of sound is the product of its frequency and wavelength which depends upon the nature of medium. It is greater in solids than liquids and gases. Sound that travels in a given medium and strikes the surface of another medium bounces back into the same medium, this phenomenon is called reflection of sound. Sound possesses some characteristics due to which we can distinguish between high and low frequency sounds, loud and faint sounds etc. Audible, ultrasound and infrasound are types of sounds.
(a) What is the source of production of sound? 1 (b) State any two characteristics of sound. 1 (c) In which medium is the speed of sound the fastest? 1 (d) The following graph shows the velocity versus wavelength of a particular wave. Observe the graph and state which element of the graph represents the time period (T) of the sound wave. 1
