Answer:
how do we say the rule as good or bad ?
To say, rule as good or bad, we have to analyse the overall development of economy, education, culture, life style, overall changes in society etc. let us analyse all of this one by one.
Economy
1. Before British rule, India was well known for manufactured products , species and handicraft etc . After industrial revolution, India became supplier of raw material and biggest consumer of manufactured products.
What is the reason for such change in India?
Britain imposed heavy tax on Indian manufactured products whereas British products were free from tax in India. It made huge cost difference in Indian and British products. As a result Indian manufacturing drastically closed and resulted in job less situation in India.
2. Drain of wealth
Huge amount of money was taken to Britain during British rule. Expenditure of British officials British government also paid from Indian money. British become more and more wealthy whereas Indians became more poor.
we can see the chart below for difference in income of British and Indian before and after British rule.
Education
People say British introduced modern education to India. Indian education system developed under British rule. is that true?
yes it's true up to certain extent. But the real reason behind English education was to get cheap manpower. Englishmen never gave higher position to Indians. ( Even ICS was open to all , age limit was 18 )
Even education was limited to literature or basic education. British hardly started any science or technical education institutions. By the end of the British rule, India was transformed as the English dependent country and the development in local language are limited. But for technical works, it was completely dependent on foreigners.
However this education was only limited to rich and upper class people. Women had almost no opportunity to education ( Only 8% educated).
British Rule
1. British were more focused on the money from Indians than the good governance. Taxes were very high. British agents used to collect the taxes from the poor even during famines. Lakhs of people died in famines, British least bothered about the people during such famines.
2. Development of railways, telegraph, postal services etc was to reduce the difficulties of administration.
3. There were hardly no industrial development apart from few steel and cement industries (because raw material was available only in India). Jute, cotton etc. were the major exports of India.
Socio – Cultural reforms
Only positive point I would like to add for British rule is, British supported social reforms like
- Sati abolition
- Widow remarriage
- They supported women education.
- Supported Brahmo samaj, Arya samaj etc, which were trying to bring equality in society.
British rule united India??
It’s partly true that British rule helped integrate entire India into two countries. Unfortunately “ Divide and Rule “ policy of British was the major reason for partition of India
