Yes , this statement is true because :
1. Classification is the process of categorizing/grouping organisms with similar traits or characteristics. The more characteristics they have in common , depicts that they have evolved from the same ancestors .
FOR EG :
Homologous organs are the one , which have same basic structure but different functions . This depicts that those organisms have evolved from a common ancestors . For eg : limbs of human and dogs .
2. Take another example of a brother and sister . They have common ancestors in the first generation before them ( their parents ) that is why they are closely related .
A girl and her first cousin are also related but less than the girl and her brother . Since, cousins have common ancestors THEIR GRANDPARENTS , in the second generation before them , not the first one.
Hence this proves that the more characteristics two organisms have in common , the more closely they are related and the more closely they are related , the more recently they will have a common ancestor .
