Evolution is a change in the gene frequencies in a population in response to changes in the environment in a time scale of years and not centuries. Justify this statement with reference to DDT. How does the theory of Hugo de Vries support this?

Insects and pests developed resistance against DDT within a short span of time and the DDT resistant varieties were selected and evolved more. So it didn't take centuries to develop and evolve into new variety. This justifies the above statement.

Hugo devries provided the theory of mutation. He stated that origin of species or evolution takes place by sudden mutations. With the help of mutation the resistant organisms modified their genetic makeup and made themselves resistant against DDT.So the theory of devries supports this.

DDT resistance insects evolve in few scale of years and does not require centuries.

Explanation:

  • Evolution is the important process that determines the change in the species characters with time. The main driving force for the process of the evolution is natural selection.
  • Hugo de Vries explains evolution in the terms of mutation. The mutation are sudden heritable change and beneficial mutation pass down to the next generation.
  • DDT is a chemical used to kill the pests and insects. But later on the organisms become resistance to the DDT. The mutation might have occur in the insects that makes them resistance.
  • This mutation helps in the better adaptation and survival of the insects.
